I am very excited to introduce to you our 2017–2018 WPE team! We are a fairly new team and are super excited to share all of the new wellness initiatives we have to offer this year at Marquette. The Wellness Center is located on the first floor of the 707 building where you can find us!

Morgan Hughes

Year/major: Senior/Journalism and Political Science

Next Step: I’d like to get hired as a staff writer for a non-profit investigative reporting magazine, but I’ve also applied for the Peace Corps, so we’ll see!

Why are you a WPE?: I think working to be the best versions of ourselves is very empowering. I also think that mindfulness is very empowering. Working as a wellness peer gives me the opportunity to help educate others on the steps they can take to really recognize themselves and their strengths, and hopefully to feel that empowerment too. I really believe that mindfulness is the absolute key to feeling fulfilled and confident, and it’s really exciting to organize programming that educates others about ways to do that.

Favorite Wellness Topic: My big passions are nutrition and mental health.

Hobbies: I’m a journalism student and the editor of the MU Tribune opinions desk, so I love to write and read. If I could spend every second of my day doing either of those things I’d be wholly content. I love both fiction and nonfiction, but my favorite is long-form narrative nonfiction. I’m also hugely into poetry. I love meditation, which maybe isn’t a hobby, but it is something I enjoy doing so hopefully it counts.

Fun Fact: I (sometimes) write songs and play them at open mics!

Next step: PhD in Health Psychology

Why are you a WPE?: I am a WPE because I believe there are different forms of achieving wellness and I want to be able to explore those different avenues and aid others as an effective resource towards achieving individual wellness. I definitely feel that people tend to overlook different aspects of wellness because they forget that everyone heals at a different pace.

Paige Bintz

Year/major: Junior/Biomedical Sciences and minoring in Spanish for the Health Professions and Psychology

Next Step: I am tracking Pre-med and am eventually hoping to become a general practice pediatrician.

Why are you a WPE?: I am a WPE to help others reach their full potential in the aspect of health and wellness. Both are essential to living a happy and long life. Through this position, I can educate others and help them achieve just that.

Favorite wellness topic: I love talking about mental health! I think that mental health is so important and it is vital towards ones overall well being. I also love to talk about it because it needs to be talked about. There are still many stigmas about mental health and how to care for it, and I think there needs to be way more awareness about the topic.

Hobbies: Dancing! I am on (and a dance captain of) a hip hop dance team on campus called HYPE and it is literally my life!! Other things I like to do is draw, take care of my plants, drink coffee, and create Spotify playlists.

Fun fact: I was apart of an internationally traveling group performance gymnastics group called West Bend Dance and Tumbling Troupe for about 10 years in my childhood. Through this I was able to visit about 7 different countries before the age of 13!!

Jackie Labonite

Year/major: Junior/Biological Sciences and minoring in Writing-Intensive English

Next Step: Pharmacy School

Why are you a WPE?: I am a WPE because there are so many stigmas that have to do with mental health and the best way to get rid of those stigmas is to create more and more conversation surrounding them. Everyone deserves to be healthy in all aspects of life and creating a safe space for people to achieve this is very important.

Favorite wellness topic: physical health, mindfulness, mental strength & growth

Hobbies: I enjoy working out, hiking, reading, and going to the beach.

Fun fact: I have played competitive volleyball for 10 years. I also take at least one nap per day.

Alyssa Sanchez

Year/major: Junior/Biomedical Engineering — Biomechanics

Next Step: Occupational Therapy

Why are you a WPE?: I am a wellness peer educator because I want to emphasize the importance of holistic health and wellbeing to the students here at Marquette. We’re often overwhelmed with academics and others things in college, and we start to forget to take time to treat ourselves right and take care of ourselves. I’m really looking forward to working as a WPE and having the ability to assist others in living the best lives that they can.

Favorite wellness topic: I’m really into expressing the importance of good mental health (stress, anxiety, depression, body image, etc.) and fitness

Hobbies: I’ve been a dancer for 17 years and I have played the piano for 18. I also like to work out.

Fun fact: I absolutely love spicy food and will eat hot sauce on almost anything

Laura Sienkiewicz

Year/major: Sophomore/Biomedical Sciences and minoring in Spanish for the Health Professions

Next Step: I have hopes of getting accepted into medical school one day. However, not everything always works out as planned so if I don’t end up going to med school, I think I would like to do some sort of work at a treatment center for eating disorders.

Why are you a WPE?: I am a Wellness Peer Educator because I love the idea of sharing my passion for wellness with other students at Marquette.

Favorite wellness topic: It is extremely difficult for me to choose a single wellness topic that belongs in my list of favorites but the list would definitely include nutrition, fitness, and mental health.

Hobbies: My hobbies include traveling, yoga, going to concerts (I LOVE alternative rock), spending time outdoors, and spending time with my family/friends.

Fun fact: Two fun facts about me are that I was a state qualifying pole-vaulter during my last track season in high school and that I speak Polish fluently!
